Adopt

Snowflake with her adopter, Barbara, after she was rescued by Rory and Carole one night while it was snowing. Snowflake had been abandoned by a Great Pyranees breeder, left to starve, lonely, unspayed and became pregnant, on a Reserve in a desolate area near Calgary, Alberta.

Watch video of Cajun, a happily adopted Catahoula. Cajun was born in the rubble of Hurricane Katrina, and spent a lonely puppyhood for over a year in a no-kill shelter cage before being transported to Canada for adoption. Once here, due to his fear of people, Cajun spent another year in foster care waiting a forever home.

Why Adopt?

MILLIONS of pets come into shelters every year.  60% of Dogs and 70% of cats get euthanized each year. Only 15-20% of dogs get to return to their owners and the stats say less then 2% of cats go home to theirs.  50% of the dogs in shelters get euthanized simply because there is no one to adopt them. What is the best source for finding a dog?

R-MAR recommends avoiding pet stores because so many get their puppies from puppy mills—commercial breeding facilities that keep animals in terrible conditions and use canine parents for breeding purposes only.

As a consequence, many pet store animals suffer from congenital health problems, not to mention poor socialization and numerous other issues. Well-run shelters, on the other hand, examine the animals carefully, then vaccinate, deworm, spay or neuter, and perform a behavioral assessment on each adoptable pet. That information is then used to try to match an adopter with an animal who meets his needs and fits into his lifestyle.

Many shelters also provide follow-up health care and behavior advice, and will even take the animal back if things don't work out. Adopting from a shelter turns out to be a much better deal!

For animal cruelty to exist, it is not enough to have psychopaths to perform it, we also need good people to do nothing about it.

HUSKYS IN NEED OF RESCUE!
Update: August 06

Husky Rescue

All of these amazing dogs have now been taken in by rescue groups (actually there were 24 dogs in total). Their former owner initially wanted to keep 2 of them, but Terra Maclean of Prairie Animal Rescue Society convinced him to surrender all of the dogs. Way to go Terra! Sadly, 2 of these beautiful dogs were euthanized after vet exams concluded they had terminal cancer, however, the other 22 will be given a second chance for that good life they so deserve.

This rescue effort demonstrates the amazing ability of Alberta rescue volunteers to come together as a team in times of crisis. Groups across the province networked and many took in several of these dogs, and a few of the dogs have already found their forever homes. Volunteers drove hundreds of miles to transport these dogs and many kind individuals spread the word. Although these dogs are now safe, most are still looking for homes.
