Zara (Adoption Pending)

BREED: Mastiff X
GENDER: Female
AGE: 1.5 years old
SIZE/WEIGHT: Large (65lbs)
HISTORY: Zara was found homeless on a first nation reserve. She was starving, skinny, and VERY pregnant. She luckily gave birth to her 7 beautiful puppies, here, in the warmth and loving environment of the sanctuary.
TEMPERAMENT: Calm in the house, loves going out on hikes. Perfect combination of an adventure buddy and a couch potato! Very playful with dogs she is familiar with. Loves learning new tricks.
PERSONALITY: Zara is a very loving dog, she will do anything to get your attention. As much as she likes cuddles and belly rubs on her bed, she also needs someone who will take her out on adventures. She’s been on many long hikes since her arrival at the sanctuary and she loves it. She loves to learn and is generally, very well behaved; she sits to go in and out of the house/car, knows “Go to your bed” and walks quite nicely on a leash. She’s very eager to learn.
HOW IS DOG WITH CATS, KIDS, OTHER ANIMALS: OK with cats, needs to be supervised.
Great with dogs once she warms up to them, but she needs a little bit of time and a calm environment when first introduced to new dogs. Super playful once she’s familiar with her new friends.
She has not seen many kids since she arrived at the sanctuary. No young kids for her, sorry (12 years old and older).
PETS NEEDS/BEHAVIOURAL INFO: Zara is still learning how to behave like a “normal” pet in some situations, so she needs someone willing to work on these areas with her. She will initially often bark upon meeting new doggies but LOVES playing once she learns to trust her new friends. Coming from the reserve and having a history of starvation, she does show a little bit of resource guarding behaviours. We have been working with her on these areas and she is responding very well to positive reinforcement training. She is very food and attention motivated(getting pets is a big reward for her)!
BEST MATCH: Outdoorsy couple or family with older children(12-year-old +) with another playful dog. Someone willing to work on her training.
