Understanding Our Position on Pet Surrenders
Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages. ~ Thomas A. Edison
Every pet that is surrendered to a rescue or shelter takes the place of another animal that is trying to simply survive on the streets, on the reservations, in the rubble of a natural disaster, or in horrible and inhumane conditions of high-kill shelters/pounds/dumping or hoarding grounds.
Right now, your pet is in a secure, safe, warm and loving environment: this is the best place for them to be while you make this huge, emotional decision, and we are happy to help you through it.
Two things you NEED to Understand
If you're considering surrendering and re-homing your pet, you have a reason, such as:
- Moving
- Having a baby
- Your dog bites/threatens to bite/shows aggression/is destructive/is misbehaving
- Allergies
- Family/Friend died and has a pet
- Not home much/unable to care or afford the animal/situation not fair to the animal
- Realize that there ARE resources for ALL scenarios
Pet-friendly living spaces, temporary homing options among friends and family, food banks and organizations to help with providing food or care during a time of need, doggy day cares, dog walkers, the will to make time for the appropriate amount of daily exercise and mental stimulation.
- If your reason is because of your dog's behaviour, YOU CAN CHANGE IT
Growling, snapping, possessiveness, destructive behaviour and other "bad habits" are all a means of communication for what the dog is lacking. Whether it's firm rules, boundaries and discipline, or the proper amount of physical and mental stimulation, there IS a way to put an end to the bad habits.
